I’m getting old. We all are, and this is not news. It’s just that I really feel it today.
Yesterday, George Carlin’s death was all over the place, on the news, on my yahoo feeds, and in several blogs-even my own. I grew up with him as many of you did. Thinking of him brought up several great memories for me. I listened to his albums with my Dad as a kid. Yes….I said as a kid. Where did the time go?

Today, I received an invitation to a wedding shower. Son2’s friend is getting married soon and this is a shower for the bride-to-be. I remember this boy’s first grade class picture. I remember him skinning his knees playing with my son. Now he’s getting married. He already has a two year old daughter. Where did the time go?
This guy is not the first of either of my sons’ friends to have a child or to get married. But since my sons are friends with the same group of kids since childhood, many of those who married are twenty-five to thirty years old. This particular friend is one of the younger group. The group who is 23 years old…the age of Son2.
Twenty-three. When I was twenty-three, I had two little boys. When I was twenty-three, I still lived in an apartment. At twenty-three, it was a huge deal to go out without the kids.
Twenty-three was half my life ago. Where did the time go?
Someday soon, my own boys will be the ones getting married. Babygirl will be out of high school and moving on to college in two years. Maybe I’ll even be a grandmom. Where did the time go?
I’m getting old…….

You go to hell for lying, dontchya know?
Love the quote, though.
And Tug’s title of her last blog post is cracking me up. She and CP have got to hold the titles for “coolest grandma’s on the internet EVER!”
Go do something fun, MetalMom. You’ve got a lot of wonderful years ahead of you and you’re not really old until you let yourself believe and feel that. Personally, I still want to be rockin the bedroom sheets when I’m 85!

Believe me, I do lots of fun things and yes I do still rock the sheets….but the image of ANYONE doing that at 85 is just…EEEWWWW!It is just a strange feeling to know that the ‘kids’ are now ‘adults’ and that when you look back on your life, it seems like yesterday that these things happened. This wasn’t an “I’m depressed” post, it was more of a “contemplative” post.

on June 24, 2008 at 02:21 pmMetalMom,
Trust me, age is relative. There are days that I feel incredibly old. Like now - when my vehicle just ate shit and I’m going to have to buy a new one and take on a car payment when I almost had it paid off, I’m leaving my job here in GJ to move back to Mxr to go to school - where there’s little work opportunity. But can’t afford to live in GJ with the cost of living being so high, even if I WANTED to. AND this is all going down two weeks before I leave on vacation for a week and… well, I don’t think “stressed” really covers it at this point.
So yeah, I may be “young” in a number kind of way, but I feel old sometimes, too. Like, ya know, today!
I didn’t think it was an “I’m depressed” post - you are way too good of a writer to give the wrong impression. I get the “slap in the face, OMG! Look at everybody growing up… they were just in diapers yesterdayyyyy *cue crying*” kind of thing. I just thought that maybe doing something fun would bring the “old factor” down a few knotches. I mean, nothing makes that heavy realization of how time is flying by fade, like… I don’t know… jumping in mud puddles or something else silly.
Oh! And yeah… sorry… 85 IS a little excessive lol. But you know….
I wuv your old, stinking, guts with my whole butt cuz it’s bigger than my heart, MetalMom! (Hehe)

on June 24, 2008 at 06:13 pmIf it makes you feel any better, I just got out of the hospital after emergency surgery. I have two drain tubes in my neck and have to carry an IV with me 24/7. I can stand unassisted, but I need help getting up the four steps to my apartment door. Feel younger yet, muffin?
