In the news:
A home invasion…resident pistol whipped…intruders looking for money and drugs

Unusual? Not anymore. It happened in a town not too distant from where I am. What makes this one different from any other invasion in the news?
It was my old house.
My SIL (who lives in Dad’s old house) is still three houses away. She heard gunshots. (The homeowner tried to shoot the intruder) Then she heard the police. My dad (who lives two blocks away) heard the helicopters. Two local schools were on lock-down while this all transpired.
Eventually the guys were caught.
This is scary in so many ways. Scary because my in-laws and my parents are still in that area. Scary because it had once been the place my family had called ‘home’. But scariest of all because this will become more commonplace in the news reports.
Why? Because of the economy. Crime is up all over. It starts with the drug addicts looking for the drugs or the money to get drugs. Then, as the economy continues its downward spiral, the low-income residents will be looking for money to feed their families. Of course, people will begin to arm themselves against these thieves, and innocent folks will end up hurt or dead because of errors in judgement.
As I watched the news last night, I saw the report about the invasion. I saw police coming and going out of my old house. I watched as the cameras focused on broken doorframes and bullet holes in the walls…..The walls that I once painted!
I’m so glad that I don’t live there anymore. But I can’t help but be afraid for the families that can’t get away. I have to fear for my loved ones, who won’t sell their homes because of this recession. I can’t help but feel sorry for the children who are learning that this is a ‘fact’ of their young lives.

on January 8, 2009 at 6:12 PMCrime is rampant here too, and you’re right, it is driven by this poor economy and so many people out of work. It’s a very sad, sobering realizion to think about what kind of environment the next generation is growing up in. Glad to hear all your family is okay.

That is so scary!
I can’t begin to imagine how you felt/feel seeing something like that on the news. If you need to talk, you know how to get a hold of me. Even if it’s just to vent or whatever! While I feel horrible about what happened to those poor people… I still am thankful that it wasn’t you and your family still living in that house.
I’m also sorry about the pain you went through with your back and the cauterization, but again… I’m thankful that you’re feeling better! Hopefully this will be a permanent end to ALL pain and you don’t have to deal with it anymore!
It sounds like 2008 was a busy year! It’s wonderful that you and the family got to spend so much quality time together
.
Here’s to praying that 2009 is a blessed year, filled with joy, peace, love, and LOTS of sex! Muahahaha!
Anyway, take care of yourself, sweet puhtata!
I’m so lucky to have a friend like you in my life. Much love to ya, babez
.
XOXO

on January 9, 2009 at 9:06 AMWe’ve seen a rise in both crime and EMS calls too. I think it has to be somewhat expected… but we just don’t expect ourselves to be directly affected.
Until, of course, we are.

on January 9, 2009 at 9:10 AMI would just think that people who do home invasions aren’t people who have real jobs and won’t be affected by the economy anyways, so expecting home invasions to increase as a result doesn’t seem like the next logical step.

on January 10, 2009 at 1:19 PMChris, you and I have some weird, crazy, in-sync stuff going on (just saw your Facebook message). First the tree incident, and now the home invasion situation.
I don’t know if my neighbor’s house was actually broken into yet (I contacted an officer I know to see if I can find out), but I do know there have been a rash of break-ins. And based on what the cops said last night, I would imagine their alarm had been going off, or that a door was open when they got home or something.
With the cops being outside of my house twice in two weeks, and all of the home invasions/prowler reports in our area, it’s just unsettling. Maybe it’s the bad economy bringing out all of the crazies?
Here’s to both of us staying safe! Thank God you didn’t live in that house anymore! *hug*

Well. He seemed like an odd guy for wearing a gun in his house up to the point he needed it. Then he seemed prepared.
